Upper GI endoscopy

Upper GI endoscopy (also called oesophagogastroduodenoscopy or OGD) is a commonly performed diagnostic tool used to examine the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. This procedure is essential for evaluating symptoms like persistent acid reflux, upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, and unexplained weight loss. 

The procedure involves inserting a thin, flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) through the mouth to closely inspect the upper digestive tract. It is minimally invasive and can also facilitate biopsy, bleeding control, polyp removal, and treatment of ulcers or varices. 

Early detection of gastric cancer, peptic ulcer disease, and Helicobacter pylori infections can significantly improve outcomes. Upper GI endoscopy is also used in emergency settings to identify and manage upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Most patients recover quickly, and the procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis
