ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography)

Home > ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography)

ERCP is a specialised endoscopic procedure used to diagnose and treat disorders related to the bile ducts, pancreas, and gallbladder. It is especially effective in managing gallstones, bile duct obstructions, pancreatitis, and strictures that may be causing abdominal pain, jaundice, or infections. ERCP combines endoscopy and fluoroscopic imaging to visualise the bile and pancreatic ducts, enabling therapeutic interventions such as stent placement, stone extraction, and dilation of narrowed ducts.

The procedure plays a vital role in avoiding open surgery, especially in patients with obstructive jaundice or post-cholecystectomy complications. ERCP is often performed under sedation and requires only a short recovery time. It is considered the gold standard for both diagnosing and treating bile duct diseases and pancreatic ductal problems. Early intervention with ERCP can prevent serious complications such as cholangitis and pancreatitis.
